Sitka Historical Walking Tours is part of the nonprofit Sitka Maritime Heritage Society.

We offer entertaining, compelling tours by expert locals that give you a deeper look into Sitka history, and connect you to our unique, rich, living heritage of Sitka's landscape, landmarks and people today.

Our flagship tour is a 1 1/2 hour downtown Sitka Historical Walking Tour, summer weekdays at 1 pm.

A 1 1/2 hour walking tour in historic downtown and waterfront Sitka with the real, untold and surprising story of Sitka's history: Tlingit America, Yankees in Sitka with the otter trade, the Battles of 1802 and 1804, ambitious Russians and how they really interacted with Tlingit people, who lived here, Americans both military and civilian, the circumstances of the Transfer of 1867, the Kake War, commercial fishing, WWII, boatbuilding, the longline Gold Rush, and more.

World War II History Tour
​
A 1 1/2 hour walking tour on Japonski Island, just across the bridge from downtown Sitka, showing some of the remains of the WWII Naval Air Base and US Army Coast Defenses. You will learn about how and why the base was built and Sitka's role in WWII. Also includes the background of this place in the context of Tlingit Aani or Tlingit America and how it came to be part of the USA, Russians and the circumstances of the Transfer of 1867, and Alaska in WWII.
